Gingerbread Houses are Back!

Trader Joe’s has released its annual gingerbread house, and it’s cuter than ever. The house is very similar to what has been introduced in the past, but has new little furry creatures included in the package. The house is a traditional german cookie house with a triangular architectural structure. Each house includes a little nook to stick an inlcuded tree cookie. For only 7.99$ this is a steal for sure.

The tradition of decorating sweet and spiced gingerbread is believed to have begun in the 16th century. The story goes that decorating these edible houses became popular in Germany because of the 19th century fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel.” In the story, two siblings find a house in the woods made of gingerbread and sweets, and are lured in from the uniqueness of it. This began the Christmas tradition in Germany to create whimsical and intricate houses for a fun activity. It soon began to spread to other countries and is a beloved holiday activity all around the world.

Trader Joe’s uses the traditional concepts of forming a house and makes it modern. I’d totally recommend this kit! Gingerbread houses are great to look at, but even better to decorate! One of the joys of making a gingerbread house is having the freedom to make it your own. You can let the house have a theme or even just make a mess of it with friends and family.

Perfect for children and adults alike, you can create anything your heart desires. Each kit includes gingerbread housing, fruit gummies, chocolate m & m’s, and ready-to-make icing (just add an egg white), making it easy for any age. The new creature editions to the box this year are an owl, a deer, a squirrel, and a fox. They come ready-made in the box and they’re edible!

I decided to make my own this year, and it turned out better than I could have hoped. With thick frosting and a whole lot of sprinkles (which I don’t normally like), the house turned out very festive yet simplistic. Please enjoy the photo of my glorious house, and don’t forget to pick up your own from your local TJ’s!
